Evaluating competitiveness using revealed comparative advantage index: the case of Indian textile exports

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is the evaluation of the competitiveness of Indian textile products in the global market by using revealed comparative advantage (RCA) index during the period of 2014 to 2018. The results of the study indicate that the majority of the textile commodities have RCA greater than one which indicates comparative advantage while some of them do not. The commodities such as silk, cotton, vegetable textile fibresnes, paper yarn, woven fabric, manmade filament, manmade staple fibres, carpets and other textile floor coverings and special woven or tufted fabric, lace, tapestry, etc. are found to be competitive. Impregnated, coated or laminated textile fabric and special woven or tufted fabric, lace and tapestry are the commodities which are growing at a rapid rate. The study also reveals that the USA, the UK, UAE, China and Bangladesh are major export destinations of textile commodities and India should explore more opportunities by creating demand of these commodities specifically in China and Bangladesh which are geographically closer.
