Abstract

One of the most frequent reasons of the higher use of strategic alliances and cooperative agreements is implementing growth strategies that are looking for development of new products and markets, that means, diversification strategies. Now then, in spite of great theoretic and empirical development that we can find in the literature about diversification and alliances, there is no much evidence which considers both together, that is, diversification through cooperation agreements, although it is an interesting matter of research. For this reason, the goal of this paper is to present a theoretic approach on basis that we have called “diversification by cooperation”. So, after reviewing and justifying both diversification and growth methods and their relationships, we put forward a theoretical framework that allow us to identify which are the most important factors to choice strategic alliances as the suitable way to implement the diversification strategy, clusted in two sets: context factors and business factors.
