Abstract

This article studies business models that have shaped the dominant companies in the market of food and drinks in Mexico to identify the elements related to the growth and business development in the global economy. For this purpose, two companies were studied for the sectors cornmeal, and canned and dairy products. From the concepts of business models, financial profitability and strategic movements, the analysis involves case studies to identify differentiation strategies that allow them to gain competitive advantages. In addition, we examine business models of pairs of companies. The main conclusion is that superior development in large food companies in Mexico are related to differentiation and expansion strategies through internalization, mergers and acquisitions. Also important are business models based on the reproduction of the core business with subsidiaries, taking advantage of the interconnections of the globalized economy and the diversification of products and businesses, as well as with a higher linkage of the companies with world class competitors and government and financial institutions
