Abstract

Complex analysis of cultural issues – for instance the study of the formation of cultural goods as meaningful symbolic entities and their transformation into commodities, the examination of the specific characteristics of cultural institutions as organisational settings, or the social organisation of cultural labour – demand a synthesis of sociological, cultural, and economic approaches. The fusion of different scientific disciplines, however, cannot be carried out without friction. This paper discusses some basic concepts as well as various epistemological aspects that are decisive in an interdisciplinary approach to cultural issues. Further, this paper emphasizes the practical dimension of being part of a cultural community, which is important for understanding individual commitment in the cultural field.
