Abstract

Two new publications on the Danish welfare society's history provides a range of new research on both Danish welfare’s origin and evolution of the last generation. Before the year 1799 welfare was not enrolled neither in Denmark’s birth certificate nor in medieval and Renaissance period. Apart from a short approach to the improvement for the poor economic conditions for people in the bottom of the Danish society are tough until the 1891. From this year initiated major social reformers time, when poor but especially sick, old and industrial accident victims achieve orderly and improved social conditions. These years also founded the Danish welfare design, without a great master plan but with many funding sources for mixture. This model proved to be an advantage for Denmark from 1980 to 2000, where funded pensions strengthened Denmark’s alignment with the future demographic developments. This was followed up with major reforms in the 1990s to 2010 in labor, tax and retirement in which the interest of future economic structures played a prominent role in contemporary welfare design. History, present and future, in a comprehensive political synthesis. The incentive structure was thus significantly improved including lower replacement rates for unemployed people. At the same time Denmark could maintain its position as the country in the world that had the most equal income distribution, although the Gini ratio rose during the last 10 years.
