Abstract

Corporate social responsibility activities launched by Peruvian mining enterprises have had particular importance in recent years, especially those connected to the communities where these companies work. Communities have assumed an active role in decisions related with economic and social development. This behavior is the result of an integrated approach of citizen empowerment and capacity building for sustainable development; companies, civil society, local governments and the community work together looking for a same goal. This paper shows the project of Governability in the district of Pataz, La Libertad – Peru which was launched by “Compañía Minera Poderosa S.A.”. This program empowered the local population to make their own local decisions. The results of the program indicate that collective participation in decision-making promotes sustainable development of the community.
