Abstract

La colección “Las doce tribus de Israel o Los hijos de Jacob” consta de doce pinturas de tamaño natural, faltando la de Judá que ya no aparece en los inventarios desde 1932. La serie representa individualmente a los hijos de Jacob y a Jacob mismo, la cual se identifica con el pasaje bíblico del Génesis, las bendiciones de Jacob. Esta se atribuye a Francisco de Zurbarán, quien nace en Fuente de Cantos en 1598 y muere en Madrid en 1664, siendo un gran exponente de la pintura del Siglo de Oro español, y heredero de la Escuela sevillana de pintura del siglo XVII. Zurbarán envía la serie a la Nueva España en el siglo XVII a través de un encargo de los jesuitas para el Colegio del Espíritu Santo, procedente de la península ibérica.
