Una oligarquía criolla en Cuba colonial: el cabildo de San Salvador de Bayamo en el siglo XVIII

Abstract

El Cabildo bayamés fue, a lo largo de toda la etapa colonial, uno de los que más sobresalió en la defensa de los intereses locales criollos frente a la política centralizadora de la metrópoli y las autoridades coloniales, pero no se podría encontrar nada más alejado de la democracia que la estructura y funcionamiento de este órgano del poder local. Desde finales del siglo XVI los cargos de regidor, sacados a pública subasta para satisfacer las necesidades financieras de la Monarquía, fueron acaparados por las principales familias de la localidad, que se perpetuaron en los mismos a través del sistema de renunciaciones, lo que permitió que este cargo se convirtiese en una especie de título nobiliario, que podía ser trasmitido en herencia.
