Entre demonstrar e dissimular: notas sobre o papel do vestuário na expressão de homossexualidades masculinas na história do Brasil

Abstract

O artigo discute a relação entre vestuário e homossexualidades masculinas ao longo da história do Brasil, evidenciando diferentes formas pelas quais a moda contribuiu, ao longo do tempo, tanto para a construção como para o silenciamento de identidades homossexuais. Propõe uma periodização, distinguindo quatro momentos característicos dessa relação. A análise torna possível ver como o vestuário: (i) desde o século XVI já desempenhava um papel na construção de identidades sexuais dissidentes; (ii) teve atribuído um papel relevante no discurso médico e jurídico sobre a homossexualidade do final do século XIX e início do XX; (iii) foi um vetor importante na criação do homem gay hegemônico enquanto identidade homossexual bem aceita no final do século XX; e, finalmente, (iv) tem cumprido função central como instrumento de afirmação de identidades homossexuais contra-hegemônicas no início século XXI.
