Apuntes históricos sobre la salud pública colonial en Santa María del Rosario

Abstract

La Historia de la Medicina de localidades y las prácticas desarrolladas a favor de la Salud Pública constituyen una de las carencias investigativas en la Región Latinoamericana, en este contexto Cuba no resulta una excepción, a pesar de los múltiples esfuerzos y progresos que acompañan la construcción de la Historia de la Ciencia Médica Cubana. Santa María del Rosario, la ciudad condal fundada en 1733, perteneciente a la familia Bayona y Chacón contó con algunas oportunidades llegadas de manos y vínculos familiares como el caso de D. Tomás Romay y Chacón, notable médico cubano. La presencia del célebre médico fue definitiva para el desarrollo de acciones futuras importantes, en especial en la campaña de vacunación contra la viruela. El caso de Santa María del Rosario como término municipal aporta informaciones indispensables para la comprensión de los esfuerzos por lograr la Salud Pública.
