El intelectual y el político: Félix Varela y Morales ante el trienio constitucional (1820 – 1823)

Abstract

Félix Varela y Morales (1788 – 1853) constituyó uno de los más importantes representantes de la Ilustración en Cuba durante la primera mitad del siglo XIX. Sin embargo, a pesar de los numerosos estudios hechos desde Cuba acerca de su figura y de su obra, los mismos han obviado la interpretación de una zona medular de su pensamiento: sus ideas constitucionales. Ello resulta particularmente visible en lo referente a su concepción acerca de la libertad individual. El presente artículo se propone un acercamiento a este sector de sus ideas desde dos ángulos contrapuestos en la obra de Varela: su discurso académico acerca de la libertad individual y su visión de la misma como diputado a Cortes en 1821, en relación con la cuestión de la abolición de la esclavitud en la Isla.
