Abstract

Desde finales del siglo XVIII, la repercusión del Iluminismo y la necesidad de adquirir nuevos conocimientos científicos, hacen impostergable la sustitución de la enseñanza escolástica, por los paradigmas del pensamiento teórico y científico del mundo moderno. En esta época, se desempeña el Padre Varela, como profesor de la Cátedra de Filosofía del Seminario de San Carlos. Introduce reformas radicales en la enseñanza, aplicando sus modernos conceptos filosóficos a las necesidades científicas, sociales y políticas de Cuba. Se le considera un precursor de la reforma universitaria en nuestro país, que comenzada en el siglo XX, se extiende hacia nuestros días
