Historia del transporte en el municipio Manatí, una contribución al desarrollo local desde la historia regional

Abstract

Por una necesidad del incipiente desarrollo de la industria azucarera se introduce el ferrocarril en Cuba, su construcción comienza a promoverse en 1830, pero no es hasta el 19 de noviembre de 1837 en homenaje al cumpleaños de la reina Isabel II de España, que se inaugura el primer Camino de Hierro entre La Habana y Bejucal con una longitud de 17 kilómetros. Cuba se constituía antes que la Metrópoli en el sexto país del mundo y el primero en América Latina en introducir este revolucionario medio de transporte. Manatí de igual modo se beneficia con el pujante proyecto de La Manatí Sugar Company y la construcción en 1912 del central Manatí, lo que revolucionó en muy poco tiempo un desarrollo sostenido en el transporte, particularmente la rama ferroviaria. Investigar sobre el tema es el propósito principal del grupo de trabajo, así como de conformar la historia y evolución del transporte en nuestro Municipio, y que este material sirva como incentivo para profundizar en la historia que es parte de nuestro legado y muchas personas no la conocen.
