A Geraã‡Ãƒo De Energia E O Futuro: Haverã Uma Batalha Entre Os Alimentos E Os Biocombustã Veis?

Abstract

O aumento dos preços da energia, a geopolítica e as preocupações sobre o impacto das emissões de gases de efeito de estufa sobre as alterações climáticas estão aumentando a demanda para a produção de biocombustíveis. A contribuição dos biocombustíveis para o fornecimento de energia deve crescer rapidamente, com impactos benéficos, incluindo reduções de gases de efeito estufa, a melhoria da segurança energética e novas fontes de renda para os agricultores. No entanto, a produção de biomassa para energia, também vai competir com culturas alimentares, dados os escassos recursos de terra e água, sendo esta uma grande preocupação na produção agrícola em muitas partes do mundo. Este artigo explora as implicações do aumento da produção de biocombustíveis versus a produção de alimentos, a partir de uma visão sistêmica da evolução da energia mundial. Conclui-se que, embora de menor preocupação a nível mundial, o impacto local e regional pode ser substancial.
