Magia, Mito Y Realidad Del Vever

Abstract

El vodú, religión africana del antiguo Dahomey, llegó a Haití con los primeros grupos de esclavos víctimas de la colonización europea. Se caracteriza por un complejo culto de prácticas espirituales, con órdenes jerárquicamente determinados. Con el arribo al Caribe de los negros africanos también llega a estas tierras su religión. Estos hombres se vieron forzados a encubrir a sus dioses para que no fueran identificados por los colonizadores. Crearon así un sistema de signos gráficos denominado vever. Este trabajo analiza el origen, los materiales, las funciones y los diversos elementos gráficos que aparecen en los vevers encontrados. Se realiza un estudio acerca de la significación de cada uno de los elementos del vever y recrea además como la pintura caribeña contemporánea ha asimilado el simbolismo de estos diseños.
