Félix Varela Y Morales: Un Acercamiento Al Fundador Del Constitucionalismo Cubano

Abstract

Como efecto de los estallidos liberales españoles a inicios del siglo XIX, la isla de Cuba se vio insertada dentro del debate constitucional hispánico. Sin embargo, las condiciones existentes dentro de la colonia caribeña, creadas por el Despotismo Ilustrado y el crecimiento de la plantación esclavista como sector hegemónico de la economía insular, condicionaron la aparición de un discurso constitucional propio, que tuvo en el sacerdote habanero Félix Varela y Morales (1788 – 1853) a su más importante representante. La originalidad de sus ideas constitucionales, relacionadas con la libertad individual, permite señalar en su figura al fundador de la ciencia constitucional en Cuba.
