Breve Historia De La Minería Leonesa Del Carbón

Abstract

El desarrollo de la minería leonesa del carbón se enfrentó aún a mayores dificultades que la del carbón español en general. La explotación de las cuencas leonesas no fue rentable hasta finales del siglo XIX e incluso bien entrado el siglo XX en algunas de ellas. Aunque la primera cuenca que se empieza a explotar de forma industrial es la de Sabero ya en los años 40 del XIX, solo la construcción del ferrocarril León-Gijón, que abrió totalmente el tráfico en los primeros años de la década de 1870, ayudó a que la actividad minera no desapareciese totalmente de la provincia, al facilitar la salida de los carbones de la cuenca de Ciñera-Matallana. No es hasta finales del siglo XIX cuando la industria carbonera consigue despegar con la construcción del ferrocarril de La Robla (León) a Valmaseda (Vizcaya), inaugurado en 1894, ferrocarril que venía a solucionar el problemas de transporte del carbón leonés al posibilitarle llegar al País Vasco. Y ya en el contexto de La Primera Guerra Mundial comienzan a explotarse de forma intensiva las cuencas occidentales, con la fecha clave del 23 de julio de 1919 cuando se abre al público el ferrocarril entre Villablino y Ponferrada.
