Evolución Histórica De La Explotación Del Carbón En La Provincia De León

Abstract

La minería del carbón ha tenido una gran trascendencia en la transformación social y económica de la provincia de León. Las cuencas carboníferas de León son una serie de cuencas geológicamente independientes que se distribuyen al sur de la Cordillera Cantábrica, que los separa de los yacimientos asturianos de los que representan su continuación, en una franja longitudinal discontinua. Salvo singulares excepciones, hasta la primera década del siglo XX los propietarios de las explotaciones hulleras leonesas se dedicaron solamente a explotar, con los sistemas más simples y económicos posibles, los yacimientos más superficiales. Solo paulatinamente se fueron usando pozos verticales en algunas cuencas y fue sobre todo después de la guerra Civil cuando numerosas empresas se deciden a la reconversión de sus explotaciones. Desde finales de los setenta la minería a cielo abierto se generalizó como sistema de explotación del carbón en todas las cuencas.
