La Portada Sur de Santa Cruz de La Palma: origen, proyectos y arquitectura de una fortificación militar

Abstract

Dentro de los vestigios arquitectónicos de los castillos y fortificaciones que abrigaban la defensa de Santa Cruz de La Palma, uno de los mejor conservados es la denominada Puerta Sur o Paso Barreto o de Bajamar. Este baluarte se trató de una simple batería junto a un portalón, en la vera del camino de acceso meridional de Santa Cruz. Erigido desde el siglo xvi cubrió un doble cometido: evitar un posible desembarco por este flanco y, más tarde, el cobro de la sisa o impuesto sobre los alimentos que se vendían en la capital palmera. Además, la inseguridad que podría ocasionar un ataque por esta franja motivó que desde mediado el siglo xvi, se sucedieran varios proyectos encaminados a erigir en este lugar una poderosa fortaleza, si duda, la más imponente de cuantas hubieran protegido el núcleo urbano. Aunque este castillo no se construyó, en la actualidad, se mantiene en pie una parte de la primitiva edificación en estado ruinoso. Con el objetivo de conocer este baluarte se repasa su historia, se examinan las estructuras existentes y se propone una actuación con el fin de conservar este sitio histórico.
