Abstract

Los intermediarios financieros desempeñan, indudablemente, un papel fundamental en las economías modernas. Representan el vínculo entre prestatarios y prestamistas, participan activamente en el mercado de activos financieros, afectan la oferta monetaria, la inversión y, por ende, el crecimiento económico de los países. Existen distintos tipos de intermediarios financieros, entre los que destacan los bancos, las casas de bolsa, las compañías aseguradoras, las afianzadoras y, más recientemente, las administradoras de pensiones. Sin embargo, no todas ellas pueden afectar la oferta monetaria y servir como un sistema de pagos. Estas últimas propiedades son exclusivas de la banca comercial, de aquí su importancia para el caso mexicano. Dada la importancia y el desarrollo adquirido por la banca durante los últimos 50 años, ha surgido lo que se ha denominado teoría bancaria, la cual se circunscribe al análisis de todo lo relacionado con ella desde el punto de vista económico, partiendo desde la perspectiva microeconómica hasta la macroeconómica. Esta teoría ha sido fundamental, por un lado, para el mejoramiento del desempeño microeconómico de la propia banca y, por otro, para lograr un sistema bancario más estable por medio de una regulación óptima (si es que ésta existe). De esta manera, el sistema se ha convertido en el principal medio de financiamiento de la inversión en los países industrializados y semiindustrializados. Debe notarse que ambos resultados se encuentran correlacionados en forma considerable.
