Abstract

For an oligopolistic industry, this paper analyses how trade policy can depend on the competitive nature of the markets. We study the effects of domestic and foreign mergers on the domestic country’s optimal trade policy and on exports rents and domestic welfare. There are four main results: Firstly, it is shown that if the domestic country pursues its optimal trade policy then it will always lose as a result of a foreign merger. Secondly, when the domestic country pursues its optimal trade policy, a foreign merger will reduce the exports rents. Thirdly, when the domestic government responds optimally to a domestic merger, the domestic merger will not affect domestic welfare. Fourthly.
