La emisión de billetes y la maximización de ganancias. El comportamiento del Banco Nacional de México a comienzos del siglo XX (1900-1910)

Abstract

The aim of this article is to evaluate the behavior of the Banco Nacional de Mexico (Banamex) in its function of issuing notes during the 1900-1910 period. This bank had a list of privileges in the issue business, which allowed it to put into circulation a higher volume of notes than the rest of the rival banks. It means that the stability of the system, concerning the notes issue, was closely related to the behavior of Banamex. The obtained results that Banamex managed the notes issue according to the principles of maximization of profits. Luckily, there was an effective limit to the notes circulation of Banamex, due to the optimal level, which contributed to the stability of the system.// El artículo tiene por objeto evaluar el comportamiento del Banco Nacional de México (Banamex) en su función de emitir billetes durante el periodo 1900-1910. Este banco gozó de una serie de privilegios especiales respecto al negocio de emisión, lo que le permitió colocar en circulación un volumen de billetes muy superior al de los demás bancos competidores. Ello significa que la estabilidad del sistema, en lo referente a la emisión de billetes, estuvo estrechamente ligada al comportamiento de Banamex. Los resultados obtenidos revelan que Banamex manejó la emisión de billetes conforme con los principios de maximización de los beneficios empresarios. De esta suerte, existió un límite efectivo a la circulación de billetes de Banamex, dado por el nivel óptimo, lo cual contribuyó a la estabilidad del sistema.
