Abstract

The objective of this paper is to explain the source of profitability in the Mexican banking system. It also deals with its implications regarding regulatory policy. It test two hypotheses derived from the industrial organization theory: the SCP paradigm and the Efficient Structure Hypothesis. According to the results, we conclude that both help to explain to source of profitability. Therefore, regulatory entities must limit mergers between large banks if efficiency gains are low and market entry does not ensure more competition. If these mergers are allowed, the market entry does not ensure more competition.
