Abstract

Banking crises have become a common occurrence in the aftermath of financial sector reform. Taking the example of Mexico, this study uses data envelopment analysis (DEA) to assess the managerial performance of the country’s banking industry over the period 1982-1996. The efficiency consequences of the sector’s liberalization and privatization (from 1988) are examined before turning to the crisis in the industry following the peso devaluation of December 1994. In combination with financial ratio analysis, the comparative influence of post-liberalization moral hazard incentives and managerial weakness in the origins of the 1995 bank failures is addressed.
