Abstract

In recent contributions, some economic historians established the existence of a crisis in the mining industry during the late colonial period in Mexico. Nevertheless, their arguments are weaken if we consider the effects of the mining sector on the rest of the economy. We will show that the decline in the price of silver in terms of maize was caused by increases in the production of the mining sector. Thus, the crisis-in-mining hypothesis is rejected. We calculate that Bourbon reforms caused a 25% reduction in costs in some firms in the mining industry. Thus, boom in the production of silver also was caused by the government policies. We will show that these policies could also have increased investment in Mexico.// Recientemente, parte de la historiografía económica ha establecido la existencia de una depresión en el sector minero mexicano del último periodo colonial. Clasification-JEL N46, N76
