Abstract

After several years returning to growth we are better able to fully understand the meaning of the Great Recession, something that is indispensable in order to consider the current challenges of our progress and well-being. Therefore, this article attempts to develop that understanding by analysing the competitive performance, financing and stabilizing role of the public sector to see what this legacy implies for the economic model of the future. At the same time as these features of the growth model are identified, three additional conditions are addressed, which have to do with globalization, demography and climate change, and which have remained in the background, but have now exploded onto the scene to figure as fund trends as much or more important than strictly economic ones due to the accumulation model. Taking these aspects and these conditions together will help us draw the profiles of the challenges of a development strategy on the horizon for the coming decade.
