Paro, desigualdad y pobreza en Euskadi a principios del siglo XXI

Abstract

The article analyzes the impact of the rising unemployment in the early years of the twentyfirst century in the evolution of the indicators of inequality and poverty in the Basque Country. The analysis is based in the official statistics of the Department of Employment and Social Politics of the Basque Government, particularly his Survey on Poverty and Social Inequalities, one of the oldest in Europe in this field of research. The paper analyzes the factors that caused, especially from 2012, a significant increase in inequality indices. It also considers the elements that have contributed, however, to mitigate the deterioration of living conditions in the Basque Country, placing this Region of Europe apart from the high levels of poverty and inequality that characterize all the countries of southern Europe.
