Abstract

In this paper we analyze the influence of corporate age and size on profitability as well as the economic-financial characteristics that best distinguish the most profitable companies in the construction sector within the Basque Country, compared to the less profitable ones. The information comes from the Annual Accounts sample of firms within the period of 2004-2005; the Mann-Whitney test and the logistic regression are used as analytical techniques. The results prove the relevance of the size (sales) and liquidity, and that staff productivity has a strong relationship with profitability, while not depending on age. It also proves that the more profitable firms are the ones which have a lower level of indebtedness.
