Abstract

This study analyses one of the most interesting and controversial contributions of recent post-Keynesian literature, Thirlwall’s Law –formulated to explain the role of the foreign sector in determining the maximum potential growth rate of an economy. The authors study the theoretical bases of the law and set out a broader version of Thirlwall’s model, incorporating capital flows to explain growth rates. They conclude by applying this model to the Spanish case, to estimate the contribution of the foreign sector to the growth of the Spanish economy during the period between 1962 and 1991.
