Abstract

Many product markets include public sector companies that compete with the private sector. In general, the production processes of both publicly and privately-owned companies tend to pollute the environment. However, most texts that examine environmental problems centre exclusively on industries containing private companies, whereas those that analyse the co-existence of public and private companies do not address the question of environmental pollution. This article sets out to draw a link between the two sets of literature, and analyses the way in which the presence of public companies alongside private ones in a given market affects the environmental tax set by the government and, thus, the environmental damage suffered by a country.
