Abstract

This work discusses the difficulties that information asymmetries between economic agents imply for the relationships between these agents and presents the mechanisms developed to solve those difficulties. The problerns of adverse selection, signalling, screening and moral hazard are analyzed, some of their implications for quality, labor relationships, insurance contracts, capital market financing and bank loans are derived, and signals as warranties, education levels, coinsurance or self-financing by firms are studied. The presentation emphasizes the relevance for the knowledge economy of the set of problems considered.
