Abstract

On the basis of figures from the 1996 Survey of Technological Innovation in Business, this article, using multi-variable analysis techniques, characterises industries in the Spanish econ-omy according to the innovative performance of their component companies. Unlike similar classifications, however, this study is based on figures taken exclusively from innovative companies in each industry. This has made it possible to obtain a much more precise picture of the innovative character of the various industries, eliminating as it does the influence of figures taken from non-innovating companies in each industry. Technological variables were used to characterise the industries which define the current view of the innovation process and include aspects relating to both the inputs and outputs of the innovative process.
