Abstract

Although the role of small companies in creating employment has never been denied by writers on the subject, some studies have qualified its importance, stressing that most small enterprises which are created last only a very short period of time. Among the disadvantages attributed to small enterprises are the high unit costs faced by such companies in industries where economies of scale are important. This handicap may explain the low survival rate of small companies. The article attempts to answer the question: Do small companies have greater unit costs than larger companies because of the difficulties of making use of economies of scale?
