Abstract

The integration of bio-economic analysis and developments in resources-based strategic theory provide us with a new vision of the fishing industry in terms of its bio-strategy. This article sets out the bases for this innovative view and shows how it may be applied to the case of the Basque surface fishing fleet. Within this context, it shows how changes in sea ownership have had a very important effect on the make-up of the fishing industry in the Autonomous Community of the Basque Country. At the same time, it analyses the competitive strategies of the fleet that has a priori been least affected by these changes; the surface fishing fleet. This all falls within the context of the competitive dynamics of fishing of pelagic stocks in the ocean area of the Bay of Biscay, and the writer explains this dynamic and sets forth a series of measures which might contribute to developing competitive advantages and sustainable margins for the surface fleet.
