Abstract

This paper has a double objective. Firstly, and after analysing the main explanatory theories of occupational mobility and the empirical applications carried out in Spain, some empirical evidence is thrown on voluntary mobility of Spanish workers from one company to another. That is to say, the authors attempt to assess the influence exercised by a series of productive characteristics (the educational level, experience, and specific training...) on workers desire for change. Secondly, the paper analyses which are the factors that determine promotional change in the professional career of individuals, once these have voluntarily changed companies. In order to carry out these two analyses, the first cycle of the European Union Households Panel for Spain (PHOGUE), issued by the National Statistic Institute in 1994, is used, on the basis of which «logit» models to explain what the probability of being in a given occupational situation depends on are estimated.
