Abstract

This article proposes the use of the methodology for the cyclical analysis of the economy described by Fernández (1991) in the construction of a synthetic reference indicator, as well as advanced and delayed indices, for the economic activity of the Basque Country. The result is a coincident synthetic indicator (ISC) with optimum characteristics to be used as an estimation of Basque economic growth, as well as an advanced indicator (ISA) which may be of interest in predicting the turning points in the development of this activity. A similar exercise is performed for economic activity in Spain as a whole, in order to compare development there with the Basque Country, which over recent years has seen a higher level of growth.
