Abstract

The objectives of this paper are twofold. On the one hand it analyses the evolution of the number of establishments and employment by size in the Basque Country manufacturing industry during the period 1985-93. On the other, it attempts to highlight the factors that have shaped such evolution. The evidence presented shows that the period under analysis has witnessed considerable growth in the share of small-scale production units, when measured both by number of establishments and by employment creation. This process is basically explained by a higher rate of creation than of destruction of small-scale production units in each sector.
