Abstract

The research reported in this paper presents estimates for the size of the shadow economy in Spain for the period 1973-1996, based on the currency demand approach. The basic results are as follows: 1) the size of the underground economy is 16% of the observed economy; this estimate is subject to substantial uncertainty, though; 2) increasing taxes does not result in an equivalent increase in fiscal proceeds, since part of the economy goes underground; 3) the growth rate of the observed GDP is an adequate measure of the growth rate for the whole economy, observed and underground.
