Abstract

The Spanish Stock Market has undergone a complete shake-up in the last five years. The outcome of this process appears to be positive for a regional Stock Market such as Bilbao. However, financial markets are becoming global, thanks inter al. to on line computer links. Thus, business will shift to (i) where demand is and (ii) where services are most competitive. What is at stake is the consolidation of a financial center the benefits of which depend not only on market share and direct business but on the formation of a cluster of qualified professionals able to supply for sofisticated financial services to business and Public Administration alike. The challenge for Bilbao''''s Stock Market lies in its ability to attract not only financial investors (which increasingly so will be institutions rather than individuals) but private businesses willing to quote their shares or bonds in order to get finance in exchange for future profits.
