Abstract

In this paper we examine the concept and determinants of health expenditures, and the methodological problems which arise when modelling macro and micro health expenditure. We review the main features of measuring the expenditure in health services, in Spain and abroad. We analyze empirically the determinants of aggregate per capita health expenditure. The income elasticity seems to be constant and greater than one for the last 30 years . The aggregate per capita expenditure seems to be independent on health organization, demographic structure and other variables. Lastly, we explore methodological problems and empirical evidence for Spain on private micro level health expenditure.
