Abstract

This report analyzes technological innovation in Spanish industry in terms of results expressed in the number of patents, so as to assess diverse aspects of its competitive capacity. The authors discuss the usefulness of indicators based on patent statistics and offer information on patents registered by Spaniards both in Spain and in the United States. The existing relationship between such patent indicators and other variables such a R , foreign capital, technological imports, foreign trade structures and comparable internacional advantages is then likewise analyzed so as to reveal the existing connections between technological capacity and competitive advantages within the Spanish economy.
