Abstract

This article attempts to examine the difficulties with which the theory of growth is faced if it is to incorporase technology, in a convincing way, in the heart of its analitical structure. To this end, a critical look is taken at the way technological variables are considered in the main models of growth, from the initial keynesian or neo-classical ideas to the development of the theory of generations, and from the original formulation of technical change as an endogenous variable to the most recent models, of either endogenous growth with external economies and/or increasing returns, or of a clearly schumpeterian evolutionist approach. The article ends with a reflection of a methodological nature, by way of a summary.
