Abstract

An adaptation of Spanish Industry to environmental requirements is absolutely necessary, due both to social demands and Community legislation itself. This adaptation should not only be considered as a cost, but as the opportunity for improving productive efficiency, as well as the creation of an environmental industry in itself. This is so even if one considers that the adaptation of industry would require investments of around 1.2 billion pesetas, 12% above the Gross Capital Formation especially in the energy and chemical sectors. To meet this demand an environmental industry must be promoted, which, according to data from other O.E.C.D. countries, may reach about 6% of the Gross National Product. Therefore, the challenge is in the hands of Spanish Industry itself, although specific aid may be had from the Ministry of industry and Energy, both to adapt industry to the new framework and to promote our own industry.
