Abstract

Milk production absorbs 25% of the value of agricultural production of the Autonomous Community of the Basque Country. This article shows the profitability differential of dairy milk farms in the Autonomous Community of the Basque Country compared with those of their community counterparts, and the existence of a remarkable smaller size of same. Consequently, the existence of a direct relationship between both variables (dimension and profitability) is analysed and existing scale economies are quantified in dairy milk farming. The conclusion is drawn that scale economies are important in this sector, as, with the increase in factors endowment (work and capital) the growth in production is 30% more than proportional to the increase of the factors. Another important conclusion is the noteworthy increase in economic profitability derived from a greater use of fodder produced on the farm itself for feeding cattle.
