Abstract

This article describes the health care system in the Basque Country within the framework of the different health care models existing in other countries in the area. An analysis is made of the causes underlying the growth of different types of health care services with a view to understanding their impact on future demand. The central point of the article is to evaluate the resources used and outputs obtained -as measured through indicators- of the six major functions into which health care services are divided: hospital, outpatient, pharmaceuticat etc. Finally, an estimate is made of the total cost of health care in the Basque Autonomous Community and of ist financing. Included are severas interesting tables showing the type of financing behind each health care function and the role played by the public and private sectors in the different areas of health care.
