The new, fourth edition of the IPC

Abstract

When comparing the new, fourth edition of the IPC with the third edition, various changes are apparent. Of these changes, the introduction of hybrid systems is the most far-reaching, even though the use of such systems is non-obligatory. Indexing codes relating to hybrid systems identify additional elements of information about the disclosure already covered by one or more of the classification symbols. On patent documents, such codes are presented either linked to the classification symbols with which they are associated or separately (unlinked). Standardization and clarification is another issue. A new, standardized presentation and layout of Notes has been introduced. Also the method of identifying the invention to be classified has been clarified by giving more emphasis to the importance of the description and the drawings. The ultimate aim is a higher degree of consistency in classifying aim is a higher degree of consistency in classifying between Patent Offices. As usual with a new edition of the IPC, one finds amendments in many of the classification schemes. A number of major amendments, mainly relating to the sections B, C and G, are briefly mentioned.
