Abstract

•The study aimed to investigate factors influencing risky driving behavior and potential solutions to the problem.•Road users engage in risky behavior due to problems, including qualitative, geometrical, traffic, and operational issues.•Perceived problems and accident history have a positive and direct impact on the risky behaviour of road users.•Providing fully automated RRGCs with minimum gate blockage duration emerged as the most influential mitigation strategy.•The findings would assist policymakers in developing evidence-based strategies to improve the safety and credibility of RRGC.
