Great leap or long march: Some policy issues of the development of the Internet in China

Abstract

The development of the Internet in China has come a long way in a very short time, however, it is still in an embryonic stage. There are lots of potholes as well as promising signs on the ramp leading to the information superhighway for China. This paper focuses on some issues of the Chinese government's policies in developing its Internet and offers some suggestions for the future development of the Internet in China based on the experience of some other countries and the current political, social and economic structure in China. The author argues that although China should not be left out of the ever-growing Internet community, it should be cautlous in developing its Internet because of various limitations.
