Abstract

The number of different providers (NOP) visited by one individual during a follow-up period can serve as a measure of concentration, and has formed the basis for a number of indices of continuity of care in the health care sector. In this article, the exact distribution of NOP, under the assumption of i.i.d. as well as under Markov dependence, is derived using the finite Markov chain imbedding technique. Numerical examples are given to illustrate the main results.
