Effective medium theory of electrical conduction in two-component anisotropic composites

Abstract

The electrical properties of isotropic composite systems are often described in terms of either the self-consistent approximation (SCA) or the differential effective medium (DEM) approximation. Both approaches begin with the components in the form of randomly oriented spheroidal particles. These approximation schemes will be extended to cover anisotropic materials where the components are pictured as aligned spheroids. Porous media are a special class of composite materials in which both components form interconnected (percolating) channels through the system. We show that the combined SCA-DEM approach, developed for isotropic systems by Sheng, allows us to describe bi-connected anisotropic porous media over the full concentration range.
